Chloroform is used as a raw material for producing HCFC22 (R 22), which is used widely as a refrigerant and precursor for fluoropolymers (PTFE and derivatives). It can also be used as  a feedstock for methyl- and ethyl orthoformate and as a solvent in the synthesis of pharmaceuticals and chemicals at an industrial level as well as for extraction purposes.
